Bengaluru is set to get its first toll flyover, and tenders for the project have officially been invited. The 28-km elevated corridor will connect Yeshwanthpur to KR Puram, and the toll on it can’t be collected for more than 32-and-a-half years, that’s 11,863 days to be exact, from the day the tender is awarded.
Bengaluru Smart Infrastructure Ltd (BSMILE) invited the tender on August 24. The estimated cost of the project is Rs 3,536 crore.
The route: From Yeshwanthpur to KR Puram
The flyover will start at Mathikere Cross in Yeshwanthpur and pass through some familiar landmarks: IISc, Mekhri Circle, Jayamahal, St John’s Church Road, and Ulsoor Lake, before ending near KR Puram via Old Madras Road.
It’s being built under a Build-Own-Operate-Transfer (BOOT) model, with a 30-month deadline to complete construction.
A new way of deciding toll duration
Usually, the government decides upfront how long a company can collect toll on a project. This time, BSMILE is flipping that around. Companies bidding for the project will need to specify how many days they need to recover their investment and earn their returns, and whichever bidder asks for the fewest days has a competitive edge.
No bid can ask for more than 11,863 days, and even if adjustments are made later under the agreement, the total toll period still cannot cross that cap.
Built for speed, not just shortcuts
The flyover will be four lanes wide (19.61 metres), designed for speeds between 60 to 80 km/hour. It also includes a split flyover at MEI Junction, and touches over a dozen major junctions along the way, including RT Nagar Main Road, Ulsoor Lake, Indiranagar, and Varthur Road. There will be 10 ramps going up and 10 coming down along the route.
According to the Detailed Project Report (DPR), even though the metro already connects Yeshwanthpur and Indiranagar, it takes a longer route through the city centre via Majestic. This new flyover offers a more direct east-west link, skipping the city centre entirely and cutting travel time significantly.
Civil work alone is expected to cost Rs 2,710 crore, with the superstructure making up more than 62 per cent of that amount.
