Bengaluru: The Karnataka cabinet on Thursday approved a proposal to install statues of Mahatma Gandhi, Jawaharlal Nehru, Indira Gandhi and Rajiv Gandhi at various locations in Kalaburagi city. The decision allows the Kalaburagi Municipal Corporation to go ahead with the project after obtaining the required state government clearance.

Briefing reporters after the cabinet meeting, Law and Parliamentary Affairs minister H K Patil said that while local bodies were earlier permitted to install statues on their own, state approval has now become mandatory, prompting the proposal to be placed before the cabinet. He said the aim of the initiative is to educate people about India’s freedom struggle and highlight the sacrifices made by national leaders.

The cabinet also approved the implementation of the ‘Akka Pade’ (Elder Sister Force) scheme to enhance the safety of women and children across the state. The programme will be rolled out in coordination with the Home Department in 31 districts and five police commissionerates. Under the initiative, teams will patrol sensitive and crowded areas such as buses, trains, schools, colleges, malls and other public places.

Chief minister Siddaramaiah said the government is committed to ensuring timely help and protection for women and children facing violence, neglect or exploitation. He added that the scheme will focus on creating a safe environment while providing legal awareness, immediate protection and necessary support to those in need.
