Maxillofacial Surgeons Day
Oral and maxillofacial surgeons from different institutes came together to spread awareness about the specialty of maxillofacial surgery.

Bhubaneswar: Oral and maxillofacial surgeons from different institutes came together to spread awareness about the specialty of maxillofacial surgery at the Institute of Dental Sciences and SUM Hospital here on Sunday while commemorating the birth anniversary of India’s first oral surgeon Dr. Minoo Sorabjee Ginwalla.

The Association of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgeons of India (AOMSI) observes the day on Dr. Ginwalla’s birthday every year to highlight this discipline.

Oral and maxillofacial surgery is a surgical branch, one of the nine specialties of dentistry, for correction of a wide spectrum of diseases, injuries and defects in the head, neck, face, jaws and the hard and soft tissues of the oral and maxillofacial region.

Surgeons from SCB Medical College and Hospital, Cuttack, Hi-tech Dental College, Bhubaneswar, Kalinga Institute of Dental Sciences, Bhubaneswar and IMS and SUM Hospital attended the programme.

Dr. Pushparaj Samantasinhar, medical superintendent of IMS and SUM Hospital, Dr. Neeta Mohanty, dean, Institute of Dental Sciences (IDS), Dr. Sobhan Mishra, head, Department of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery (OMFS), IDS, Dr. Swarnav Patnaik, Dr. Sthitaprajna Lenka and Dr. Pratik Tripathy, president, secretary and treasurer respectively of Odisha branch of AOMSI, Dr. Sangram Keshari Panda, and Dr. Sudhansu Sarangi, associate professors in the department of Onco Surgery at IMS and SUM Hospital were present at the programme.

They spoke about prevention of oral cancer, road safety measures and issues concerning domestic violence. Dr. Sangram Patra, principal, Hi-Tech Dental College, Dr, Niranjan Mishra, associate professor, SCB Medical College Hospital, Dr. Sandeep Samal, head, Department of OMFS, Hi-tech Dental College, Dr. Lehri, head, Department of OMFS, KIDS also attended.

Few competitions such as dance, song, quiz, face painting were organised among the dental surgeons of four different dental colleges on this event.

Apart from that a street play was conducted by the dental students of institute of dental sciences in both IMS and IDS premises that educated public about oral cancer, traffic rules among other things. Dr. Santosh Subudhi, Dr. Subrat Padhiary, Dr. Satyabrata Patnaik, Dr. Pratikshya Kothia and Dr Stiti pragyan from IDS, actively participated in the programme.
