Delhi-NCR shivers as cold wave intensifies, season’s lowest temperature recorded

New Delhi: The cold wave tightened its grip on Delhi-NCR as the national capital recorded its lowest temperature of the season so far, bringing harsh winter conditions on Saturday. Dense fog and icy winds continued to trouble residents, prompting the India Meteorological Department (IMD) to issue a yellow alert and advise caution due to low visibility and intense cold. The minimum temperature dropped to 4.6 degrees Celsius, making mornings especially uncomfortable across the city.

Weather conditions also worsened Delhi’s air quality, which slipped back into the ‘very poor’ category after showing brief signs of improvement. A thick layer of fog mixed with smog covered many areas, reducing visibility and raising health concerns. Children, senior citizens and people with breathing problems were particularly affected.

Data from the Central Pollution Control Board (CPCB) showed high pollution levels across several locations. Areas such as Dwarka Sector 8 and JLN Stadium reported AQI readings near the higher end of the ‘very poor’ range. Other places including ITO, Dilshad Garden and the IGI Airport area also recorded poor air quality, forcing many residents to cut down on outdoor activities.

Dense fog during the early morning hours led to very poor visibility, especially on roads and near the Indira Gandhi International Airport. While runway visibility dropped at times, flight operations remained normal with no delays or cancellations reported as of Saturday morning. Traffic authorities advised drivers to move slowly, use fog lights and maintain safe distances to prevent accidents.

According to IMD forecasts, foggy and misty conditions are expected to continue over the next few days. Dense fog is likely during early mornings on January 10, followed by moderate fog on subsequent days. From January 11 to January 15, fog is expected to remain a regular feature, particularly during morning and night hours. With no major change in temperatures predicted, commuters are advised to stay cautious as Delhi’s harsh winter is set to persist.
