Bhubaneswar: More than 3,200 candidates, including several graduates and postgraduates, appeared for the written examination for just 102 home guard posts in Odisha’s Jharsuguda district on Sunday, officials said, highlighting the intense competition for government-linked jobs.

Officials said a total of 4,040 applications were received for the recruitment, out of which over 3,200 aspirants turned up for the examination. The home guard position, which is a temporary service under the Odisha Police, requires a minimum educational qualification of Class V and offers a daily remuneration of Rs 623.

Of those who took the written test, around 1,010 candidates will be shortlisted for the next stage, the physical efficiency test. The final selection will be based on performance in both the written and physical examinations, officials added.

The large turnout in Jharsuguda comes days after similar scenes were witnessed elsewhere in western Odisha. In Sambalpur, around 8,000 candidates had appeared for 187 home guard posts at the Jamadarpali airstrip, while nearly 9,000 aspirants wrote the examination for 202 posts in Rourkela.
