New Delhi: Police have filed a case of abetment to suicide against unidentified persons after a 31-year-old M.Sc. Physics student at IIT Delhi died last week. Officials say he jumped from a building on the campus here on August 22.
What happened that morning
According to initial findings, the student entered the IIT Delhi campus through the main gate around 8 am. He then walked over to the Lecture Hall Complex and took a lift up to the sixth floor. He is believed to have jumped from the front of the building shortly after.
He was rushed to the campus hospital, but doctors declared him dead on arrival. A call about the incident reached Kishangarh police station around 8.30 am, after which officers rushed to the scene. A crime team and a forensic unit were also brought in to gather evidence.
The investigation so far
Police say no suicide note was found at the site. A mobile phone recovered from the student’s pocket has been seized and is now being examined. Investigators are also collecting his counselling records and other relevant details from the institute, as they try to understand what led up to his death and whether anyone else may have played a role.
The case has now formally been registered under abetment to suicide provisions, targeting persons who haven’t yet been identified.
IIT Delhi’s response
The institute earlier said it was deeply saddened by the student’s death and confirmed that Delhi Police were looking into the matter. It added that it is standing by the family and offering them all possible support.
