Hyderabad Police roll out ‘zero drugs’ plan ahead of New Year festivities
Hyderabad: The Hyderabad Police have announced a strict “zero drugs” policy for the upcoming New Year celebrations, warning of tough action against anyone found violating the law during the festive period.
City police commissioner V C Sajjanar, while chairing a coordination meeting with senior officers on Friday, directed personnel across ranks to maintain heightened vigilance throughout the city. He said enforcement teams must keep a close watch to ensure that drug-related activities are completely curbed during the celebrations.
According to a police release, a multi-tier security strategy has been put in place, involving specialised wings such as the Hyderabad Narcotics Enforcement Wing (H-NEW), the Task Force, the Special Branch and local police units. Dedicated surveillance teams have already been deployed at pubs, hotels, restaurants and other event venues.
The Commissioner also ordered continuous monitoring of individuals with a history of drug-related offences over the past two years. Officers have been instructed to compile updated lists of known drug peddlers and consumers, while also tracking details of people arriving in the city for New Year events.
Police said the enforcement drive will extend beyond public spaces, with private gatherings at service apartments and hostels also coming under scrutiny to prevent illegal activities. As part of crowd management and law enforcement, all pubs, hotels and restaurants have been directed to shut New Year celebrations by 1:00 am.
Sajjanar warned that strict action would be taken against violators, including immediate cancellation of licences if establishments are found flouting the rules or indulging in unlawful activities. Check-posts and barricades will be set up at key locations such as Maitrivanam, Necklace Road, Tank Bund and KBR Park to manage the expected rush of revellers.
While emphasising robust security measures, the Commissioner said efforts would be made to ensure that the public is not inconvenienced. He instructed officers to act responsibly and facilitate peaceful celebrations.
“Our aim is to ensure that not a single drug-related case is reported in Hyderabad during the New Year celebrations. Special forces have been deployed, and all units must work in close coordination to uphold the reputation of the City Police,” Sajjanar said.
