New Delhi: A 22-year-old woman died and six others were injured after a car crashed into them in East Delhi’s Ghazipur area on Wednesday, according to police reports.

The incident occurred around 9 pm, prompting locals to react by vandalizing the offending vehicle and assaulting its driver, who sustained severe injuries and has since been hospitalised, according to police sources. A circulating video on social media shows enraged people damaging the car’s windshield, windows and attempting to force open its doors before overturning it.

Allegations have surfaced from locals suggesting the driver was intoxicated. However, authorities stated that a medical examination of the driver would be conducted to confirm intoxication. Deputy Commissioner of Police (East) Apoorva Gupta stated, “A total of seven injured individuals were admitted to Lal Bahadur Shastri Hospital, comprising five women and two men.”

One of the injured, identified as Sita Devi from Ghaziabad, succumbed to her injuries, as confirmed by the police. The victims hailed from Khoda Colony on the Delhi-Ghaziabad border, according to police reports.

“The accused is presently in police custody, and legal proceedings are underway,” the officer informed.
