Ahmedabad: The Sabarmati Riverfront is set for a significant upgrade with the development of a new one-kilometre Linear Garden between Ellis Bridge and Nehru Nagar on the eastern stretch. The Ahmedabad Municipal Corporation (AMC) has created the project at a cost of Rs 12 crore, positioning it as a blend of recreation, heritage and learning.

The Linear Garden has been designed to offer visitors a walk through Ahmedabad’s history, tracing the city’s architectural and urban evolution through interactive and informative installations. AMC officials said the space has been planned not only as a leisure zone but also as an educational experience for residents and tourists.

Residents have welcomed the addition enthusiastically, describing it as a meaningful enhancement to the riverfront. Rakesh Bhavsar, a resident, said the garden adds “beauty and value” to the popular promenade, while another resident, Narendra Rajput, expressed pride in the city’s continued focus on improving public spaces.

Devang Dani, chairperson of AMC’s Standing Committee, said the garden aims to provide “complete insight into Ahmedabad’s heritage and growth” while offering diverse recreation options.

Developed under a Public-Private Partnership (PPP) model, the Linear Garden is expected to open to the public early next year. The new space will include special zones for senior citizens, play areas for children and dedicated amenities for families, making it a comprehensive urban leisure hub.

The addition further strengthens Ahmedabad’s reputation for vibrant green spaces. Along with the existing Sabarmati Riverfront gardens, including the expansive Biodiversity Park, the city also boasts popular public spaces such as Law Garden and Victoria Garden near Ellis Bridge.

Across Gujarat, gardens continue to serve as important cultural and ecological assets. Vadodara’s Sayaji Baug, one of India’s largest public gardens, Gandhinagar’s Children’s Park and Indroda Nature Park, Bhavnagar’s Nilambag Palace gardens and Jamnagar’s Pratap Vilas Palace gardens highlight the state’s commitment to green infrastructure. These parks and gardens act as vital urban lungs, cultural landmarks and community spaces, enriching the quality of life for residents while promoting environmental awareness.
