Ranji Trophy 2025-26: Samal, Poddar steady Odisha on Day 1 against Jharkhand
Jamshedpur: Odisha ended the opening day of their Ranji Trophy clash against Jharkhand at the Keenan Stadium, here, on 242 for 6 after electing to bat first.
Odisha were made to work hard for their runs on a surface that offered assistance to the bowlers. At stumps on Day 1, the visitors had reached 242/6, with key contributions from Swastik Samal and Govinda Poddar anchoring the innings.
Samal grinds it out
Swastik Samal played a patient and determined knock of 79 off 168 balls. The right-hander struck 7 fours and 2 sixes, maintaining a strike rate of 47.02. Poddar provides stability
Experienced campaigner Poddar chipped in with a steady 64 off 120 deliveries. His knock included six boundaries and came at a strike rate of 53.33. Poddar’s composure in the middle overs helped Odisha rebuild and consolidate after early setbacks.
Saurabh, Aditya lead Jharkhand’s response
Jharkhand’s bowlers kept things tight throughout the day. Saurabh was the standout performer, returning impressive figures of 3 for 34 from 16 overs, including 5 maidens, at an economy rate of 2.13. He consistently hit the right areas and applied pressure from one end.
Aditya Singh provided able support, claiming 2 wickets for 24 runs in his 11 overs, with 3 maidens, maintaining an economy of 2.18.
Debut cap for Sayed Tufayl Ahmad
The day also marked a special milestone for Odisha as Sayed Tufayl Ahmad made his First-Class debut. He received his maiden cap from senior cricketer Biplab Samantaray ahead of the start of play, adding a memorable touch to the opening day proceedings.
