18-year-old BSc student arrested for stealing bag with valuables worth Rs 20 lakh at Delhi Metro
New Delhi: An 18-year-old BSc student has been arrested for allegedly stealing a bag containing gold jewellery and other valuables worth nearly Rs 20 lakh from a Delhi Metro station, police said on Saturday.
The accused, identified as Hina, is a first-year BSc student. A case was registered at Kashmere Gate Metro Police Station on January 22 after a complaint was filed about a missing bag carrying expensive jewellery and other items.
During the investigation, police scanned CCTV footage from Chandni Chowk Metro Station. They spotted a young woman dressed in a pink jacket and black pants picking up the bag and boarding a metro train headed towards Millennium City Centre.
Further review of CCTV cameras at Barakhamba Metro Station showed the same woman continuing her journey before eventually exiting from Gate No. 2 at Noida Sector-52 Metro Station.
Using a combination of technical surveillance and ground-level inquiry, police traced and detained the suspect.
During questioning, Hina told police that she had visited Chandni Chowk market with her family to shop for her cousin’s wedding. She claimed that while passing through the baggage scanner at the metro station, she picked up an extra bag that did not belong to her and took it home.
Police said she could not give a convincing explanation for not informing metro authorities or attempting to return the bag.
The stolen bag was later recovered in full, along with all the gold ornaments and other valuables inside. Officials confirmed that the accused has no prior criminal record. Police said further legal proceedings are underway in the matter.
