Five policemen injured as demolition drive near Delhi mosque turns violent, situation brought under control
New Delhi: Five police personnel sustained minor injuries after an anti-encroachment drive near a mosque in central Delhi turned violent in the early hours of Wednesday, officials said, adding that the situation was quickly brought under control.
The incident occurred during a demolition operation carried out by the Municipal Corporation of Delhi (MCD) near the Syed Faiz Elahi Mosque and an adjoining graveyard in the Turkman Gate area. The drive was conducted in compliance with directions issued by the Delhi High Court.
According to police, tensions rose when MCD teams moved in with demolition equipment, prompting a group of around 100 to 150 people to gather at the site. While many dispersed after being counselled by authorities, a few individuals allegedly resorted to stone-pelting, leading to clashes.
To control the situation, police used teargas shells and mild force. Normalcy was restored shortly thereafter, the Delhi Police said in a statement.
Deputy commissioner of police (Central) Nidhin Valsan said the demolition was scheduled for the night of January 6 and 7, and adequate police force had been deployed in advance to maintain law and order. Five policemen suffered minor injuries during the incident and were provided medical treatment.
Legal action will be initiated after examining medical reports and recording statements, the DCP said, adding that CCTV footage from the area is being reviewed.
Officials said the demolition involved a banquet hall and a dispensary near the Faiz-e-Ilahi Mosque, which had been identified as encroachments by the court.
Police added that the MCD, being the land-owning agency, had informed them in advance and requested security arrangements. Authorities also said they had engaged with local residents beforehand, explaining that the action was being taken as per court orders, and received cooperation from most people.
Extensive security arrangements were put in place, with senior officers deployed across the area and coordination meetings held with local peace committee members to prevent escalation.
