Traffic restrictions in Delhi today due to Lionel Messi’s visit, police issue advisory
New Delhi: With global football superstar Lionel Messi arriving in Delhi on Monday, the Delhi Police have issued a detailed traffic advisory, warning commuters of diversions and restrictions around the Arun Jaitley Stadium area.
Messi is set to begin the final leg of his India tour in the national capital. As part of his visit, the Argentine legend is also expected to meet prime minister Narendra Modi. The main public event linked to his Delhi schedule will be held at the Arun Jaitley Stadium.
According to the advisory released by the Delhi Traffic Police on Sunday, traffic diversions will be enforced on key stretches including Bahadurshah Zafar Marg and Jawaharlal Nehru Marg. Movement of heavy vehicles has been restricted from Daryaganj towards Bahadurshah Zafar Marg and from Guru Nanak Chowk to Asaf Ali Road to ensure smooth passage during the high-profile visit.
In a post shared on social media platform X, traffic officials urged commuters to avoid Bahadurshah Zafar Marg, JLN Marg and Asaf Ali Road due to expected congestion caused by heavy movement linked to Messi’s programme.
During the event at the Arun Jaitley Stadium, Lionel Messi will felicitate teams from Minerva Academy, which have won three youth-level trophies. Delhi Police have also released specific entry and exit points for ticket holders attending the event.
Parking around the stadium has been banned, with strict enforcement including towing and fines for violations. Authorities have advised the public to use the Delhi Metro and public buses to minimise traffic congestion during Lionel Messi’s visit to the city.
