IPL 2026 auction likely in Abu Dhabi on Dec 15 or 16, major trade between CSK and RR on the cards
New Delhi: The Indian Premier League (IPL) 2026 player auction is expected to be held in Abu Dhabi, with December 15 or 16 emerging as the probable dates for the high-profile event, according to media reports.
While December 14 was initially proposed by the franchises, discussions within the IPL Governing Council (GC) have narrowed it down to the third week of December, with final confirmation likely soon. The Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB), who clinched their maiden IPL title in 2025, will enter the auction looking to strengthen their championship-winning squad.
This will mark the third consecutive overseas IPL auction, following previous editions held in Jeddah and Dubai. According to reports Abu Dhabi was chosen for its logistical convenience and accessibility, especially for overseas support staff and broadcasters engaged in parallel cricket commitments.
Although Mumbai and Bengaluru were initially considered as potential venues, the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) reportedly opted for Abu Dhabi due to its superior infrastructure and global connectivity.
Meanwhile, all 10 IPL franchises must submit their retention lists by November 15. Ahead of the deadline, a blockbuster trade is reportedly in the works between Chennai Super Kings (CSK) and Rajasthan Royals (RR).
According to sources, Sanju Samson, RR’s long-time captain and wicketkeeper-batter, could move to CSK, while Ravindra Jadeja may head the other way in a potential player-swap deal. Talks between the two franchises are said to be in advanced stages, with a final announcement expected before or on the retention deadline.
RR had previously explored trade options for Samson with multiple franchises, including Delhi Capitals (DC), but discussions reportedly stalled. If the CSK-RR deal goes through, it could be one of the most significant player trades in IPL history.
There were also reports suggesting a possible move of Washington Sundar from Gujarat Titans (GT) to CSK, though that transfer appears unlikely after the Ahmedabad-based franchise assured the allrounder of regular game time in the 2026 season.
