Bhubaneswar: Surgeons at the Institute of Medical Sciences and SUM Hospital’s Phulnakhara campus successfully extracted a 1.5kg tumour from a pregnant woman. Led by Dr Smrutishree Sahu, the surgical team ensured the safety of both the mother and the baby during delivery.

The team performed a cesarean section to deliver a healthy baby boy while simultaneously conducting a myomectomy to remove the uterine fibroid.

The support from the dean of the new campus of IMS and SUM Hospital, Prof Arakhita Swain and medical superintendent Prof Rajesh Kumar Lenka bolstered the surgical team’s efforts. The team included Dr Siddharth Gautam, Dr Soumya Ranja Samal, Dr Pragya Nanda, Kamalini Mallick, Lipsa Rani Ojha, Priyanka Swain and Subhankar Mphapatra.

The hospital, inaugurated by Odisha chief minister Naveen Patnaik on January 22, provides specialised medical care at affordable rates. With 2000 beds, the hospital offers 24-hour emergency services, including ICU, ICCU, PICU, NICU and specialised units for cardio-thoracic, vascular surgery and hemato-oncology patients.

Moreover, it serves patients under the state government’s Biju Swasthya Kalyan Yojana (BSKY) scheme.
