National bird sanctuary to be set up in Prayagraj to boost eco‑tourism

Prayagraj: Prayagraj is gearing up for a transformative environmental project: the establishment of a National Bird Sanctuary at Kanihar, roughly 22 km from the Sangam area in Jhunsi. The proposed sanctuary spans about 68 hectares and is integrated with plans for riverfront development. The project comes with a substantial budget of Rs 132 crore.
One of the sanctuary’s central features will be Kanihar Lake, among Uttar Pradesh’s largest natural water bodies. This lake and its environs are expected to serve as nesting and resting grounds for a wide variety of resident and migratory birds, including Siberian species that traverse long distances to reach Indian wetlands. The sanctuary aims to both conserve biodiversity and transform Prayagraj into a destination for eco‑tourism.
The Times of India reports that the Prayagraj Development Authority (PDA) has finalised the Detailed Project Report (DPR) and is awaiting state government approval to start construction. The broader riverfront scheme envisions walkways, viewing decks, interpretive signage, landscaping and amenities for tourists and birdwatchers. The sanctuary is expected not only to offer ecological benefits but to generate local employment through guide services, maintenance, hospitality and allied sectors.
Critics and environmentalists, however, urge caution. Construction activity and increased human presence risk disturbing fragile habitats. Proper buffer zones, waste management systems, minimal light pollution, and strict visitor regulations will be essential.
