Nagpur police crackdown: Street boozers rounded up ahead of Diwali

Nagpur: In anticipation of the Diwali festivities, the city police launched a targeted campaign named Operation Night Watch to clamp down on public drunkenness and associated disturbances.
According to media reports, during coordinated night patrols, 416 individuals were detained for consuming alcohol in public places. Additionally, 185 hotels and dhabas operating beyond legal hours were issued closure orders and 32 establishments serving illicit liquor were penalised.
The operation also involved detaining 31 suspicious persons for interrogation, yielding intelligence about local criminal networks. Police highlighted a drop in burglary cases in Zone 4, underscoring the preventive impact of visible enforcement. QR codes were introduced at crime‑prone spots for real-time monitoring and a WhatsApp coordination group was set up for rapid updates.
With police visibility increased and norms strictly enforced, authorities hope to ensure a safer festival season. Locals have expressed support, particularly in areas where ill-lit streets offered cover to miscreants.
