Kanpur Lamborghini crash: Shivam Mishra granted bail hours after arrest

Kanpur: Shivam Mishra, son of local businessman K.K. Mishra, was granted bail by a Kanpur court on Thursday, just hours after being arrested in connection with the Lamborghini crash that injured several people on VIP Road earlier this week.

Police had produced the 35-year-old before the court of the Additional Chief Judicial Magistrate around 10 am and sought 14 days of judicial custody. However, the court rejected the request and granted him bail on a personal bond of Rs 20,000, his lawyer Anant Sharma said.

Shivam Mishra was taken into custody from a hospital in Delhi, where he was undergoing treatment for a medical condition, as claimed by his family. He was then brought to Kanpur and presented before the court.

The arrest came a day after a man named Mohan Lal approached a local court claiming that he, and not Shivam Mishra, was driving the luxury car at the time of the accident and wanted to surrender. The court dismissed his plea after police maintained they had evidence showing Shivam Mishra was behind the wheel.

The incident took place around 3 pm on Sunday when a Lamborghini Revuelto, reportedly worth over Rs 10 crore, rammed into pedestrians and vehicles in the upscale Gwaltoli area. An 18-year-old e-rickshaw driver, Mohd Taufeeq, who was injured in the crash, filed a complaint.

Police said CCTV footage and eyewitness accounts suggest the car was speeding before the collision. Videos shared on social media appear to show a man believed to be Shivam Mishra being pulled out of the driver’s seat by private security personnel and taken away in another SUV shortly after the crash.

Initially, the FIR mentioned an “unidentified driver.” However, it was later revised to name Shivam Mishra after preliminary evidence surfaced.

While police have maintained that their investigation points to him as the driver, his father and legal team have denied the allegation. They claim a hired driver was driving the car and that Shivam Mishra was unwell at the time, possibly suffering a medical episode. His father has also alleged that the vehicle had developed a technical fault before the crash.

Officials said all claims, including medical and technical aspects, will be examined as part of the ongoing investigation.
