Experts highlight importance of lifestyle for Parkinson’s disease management

A Walkathon was organised to raise awareness about Parkinson’s disease.

Bhubaneswar: Addressing an awareness programme on World Parkinson’s Disease Day, renowned neurosurgeon Prof (Dr) Ashok Kumar Mahapatra emphasised the critical rise in patients suffering from Parkinson’s disease. He highlighted that this neurodegenerative disorder, caused by a lack of dopamine hormone in the brain, affects memory, sleep, concentration and emotion, particularly with age progression.

The event, organised by Institute of Medical Sciences and SUM Hospital, also featured insights from experts like Prof (Dr) Niraj Kumar from AIIMS, Hyderabad, and Prof (Dr) Pusparaj Samantasinhar, medical superintendent of IMS and SUM Hospital. Prof (Dr) Srimanta Patnaik, associate professor in the Neurology department, also contributed to the discussion.

Prof (Dr) Mahapatra emphasised the role of a well-balanced lifestyle, physical exercise and proper diet in countering Parkinson’s disease. The event also included a Walkathon to raise awareness about the ailment, with Prof (Dr) Lulup Kumar Sahu offering the vote of thanks.
