Bhubaneswar: Subjects such as application of remote sensing in predicting high-impact extreme weather events in India were discussed at the two-day workshop organised by the Institute of Electrical and Electronic Engineers (IEEE) –Geoscience and Remote Sensing Society (GRSS), Kolkata chapter, at SOA Deemed to be University recently.

The workshop aimed to explore the various facets of remote sensing and its practical applications in today’s world.

The other topics discussed at the workshop included remote sensing and Geographic Information System (GIS) applications for sustainable earth observations, remote sensing image spectroscopy and its applications and radar remote sensing and its applications.

Prof Barun Roychoudhury from Presidency University, Kolkata, Prof UC Mohanty, Professor at the Centre for Climate Smart Agriculture at SOA Deemed to be University, Prof Avik Bhattacharya from the Centre of Studies and Resources Engineering at IIT Bombay and Prof Debadatta Swain from the School of Earth, Ocean and Climate Sciences at IIT Bhubaneswar were among the resource persons.

During the workshop, Prof Swain conducted a hands-on session in collaboration with the School of Geography and Environmental Science at University of Southampton, UK. Prof Bhattacharya also conducted another interactive session.

Around 40 participants including faculty members, research scholars, post graduates and under graduates attended the workshop.

Prof Pradipta Kumar Nanda, vice-chancellor of SOA and former chair of IEEE GRSS, Kolkata chapter, was the convenor of the workshop while Prof Tripti Swarnkar, Professor at the Institute of Technical Education and Research, faculty of engineering and technology of SOA, and chair of the IEEE Bhubaneswar Women in Engineering Affinity Group (WIE AG) acted as the co-convenor. Dr Sarat Chandra Sahu, eminent meteorologist and director of SOA’s Centre for Environment and Climate (CEC) attended as a special invitee.
