Indore has once again clinched the title of the most cleanest city in India for the seventh consecutive time, sharing the top position with Surat in the government’s annual cleanliness survey. Meanwhile, Navi Mumbai held on to the third spot in the ‘Swachh Survekshan Awards 2023.’

In the ‘best-performing states’ category, Maharashtra emerged as the cleanest state, with Madhya Pradesh and Chhattisgarh following suit.

At a ceremony attended by Union Housing and Urban Affairs Minister Hardeep Singh Puri, President Droupadi Murmu gave away the awards. Among them, Saswad in Maharashtra was recognised as the cleanest city among those with less than 1 lakh population. Patan in Chhattisgarh and Lonavla in Maharashtra secured the second and third spots in this cleanliness category. Moreover, Varanasi and Prayagraj received accolades for being the cleanest towns along the Ganga River.

The Swachh Survekshan Awards, a comprehensive nationwide cleanliness survey conducted by the Indian government, evaluates cities based on diverse parameters such as waste management, public sanitation, and citizen feedback. Notably, the 2023 awards witnessed participation from over 4,000 urban local bodies, marking it as the world’s largest cleanliness survey.
