Surajkund Mela tragedy: On-duty inspector killed after swing collapses

Faridabad: A 58-year-old Haryana Police inspector lost his life while trying to rescue people after a high-thrill swing collapsed at the Surajkund International Crafts Mela on Saturday evening. At least 13 people were injured in the incident.

Inspector Jagdish Prasad, who was on duty at the fairgrounds, suffered fatal head injuries when part of the “top spin” ride fell during the rescue operation. He was declared brought dead at the hospital, officials said.

The accident occurred around 6 pm on Saturday when one end of the swing, carrying around 26 people including women, suddenly came loose while rotating and crashed to the ground. The ride, which swings like a pendulum while spinning on its own axis, is designed to simulate a giant wave and can rotate up to 8 to 10 times per minute. Eyewitnesses said screams of excitement quickly turned into panic as the structure hit the ground, triggering chaos at the crowded venue.

About 19 people were reported to be on the swing when it tilted mid-air before collapsing. Eleven to thirteen people sustained injuries and were rushed to nearby hospitals. Deputy commissioner Ayush Sinha said nine injured persons were admitted to a private hospital, while four were taken to the Civil Hospital.

Inspector Prasad, currently posted in Palwal, had joined the Haryana Armed Police in 1989 and was due to retire in March after 36 years of service. A senior officer said he displayed exceptional courage while attempting to save those trapped in the ride. He had earlier been awarded the Police Medal by the Haryana Governor in 2019-20.

An FIR has been registered against the ride vendor. Authorities said a committee had been conducting daily inspections of the amusement rides at the mela.

Haryana tourism minister Arvind Sharma, who visited the spot, said a thorough probe has been ordered and assured strict action against those responsible. Chief minister Nayab Saini said the state government would provide all possible assistance to the injured and their families.

The 39th Surajkund International Atmanirbhar Craft Festival 2026 was inaugurated on January 31 by Vice President CP Radhakrishnan. The annual fair, one of India’s largest cultural events, has drawn participation from over 50 countries this year, with Egypt as the partner nation.
