SUM Hospital to set up multi-drug resistant TB centre

A multi-drug resistant TB centre will soon be set up at SUM Hospital.

Bhubaneswar: The Institute of Medical Sciences and SUM Hospital here will be setting up a centre to treat patients suffering from multi-drug resistant tuberculosis, according to its dean Prof (Dr) Sanghamitra Mishra.

Multi-drug resistant TB has been a worrying factor for medical experts as efforts were on to counter the problem. The multi-drug resistant TB Centre, to be set up by the hospital, will treat such patients with alternative drugs, Prof. (Dr.) Mishra said while speaking at a programme organised in the hospital to mark the World TB Day on Saturday.

In view of the central government’s target to completely eradicate TB from the country by 2025, the new centre would cater to the need of patients from all over Odisha, she said.

The programme was also addressed by Dr Alpa Dalal, head of the Department of Pulmonary Medicine of Jupiter Hospital, Thane and nodal chairman of the DR TB Centre of Guru Tegh Bahadur Hospital, Mumbai.

She spoke about the causes of the disease, its treatment and eradication. Dr. Dalal said the discipline of pulmonary medicine had started to receive much attention after the Covid-19 pandemic swept across the world and doctors and medical professional needed to work together to end tuberculosis.
Prof (Dr) Pusparaj Samantasinhar, medical superintendent of the hospital and Prof (Dr) Banani Jena, head of the department of pulmonary medicine also addressed the gathering.
