SOA wins cricket, tennis titles in four-day sports fest

Bhubaneswar: SOA Deemed to be University won the cricket and tennis events while finishing runner-up in volleyball and basketball at the four-day Sports Fest organised by the university which concluded here on Tuesday.

SOA clashed with CV Raman Global University in the cricket final which ended in a thrilling tie. Batting first, SOA scored 91 for 8 off 12 overs while CVRGU could make 91 for five off the allotted overs. SOA then pulled off win in the Super Over.

SOA’s players came up trumps in the tennis events defeating CV Raman Global University in the final as per AIU rules. While Amitoj Singh and Jaydish won two men’s singles matches, Nilanjana Saha won the women’s singles. Amitoj defeated Mohammed Asif Raza of Centurion University 8-0 while Jaydish brushed aside the challenge of Pritam 8-4. Nilanjana Saha beat Saloni Kumari 8-1 to win her singles tie and Amitoj and Jaydish beat Rahul Kumar and Upuneeth Chowdhury 8-0 to win the doubles clash.

Utkal University won the basketball (Men’s) final defeating hosts SOA 54-40 while Rama Devi Women’s University took the women’s crown beating SOA 31-25. In Volleyball, CV Raman Global University beat SOA 25-17, 26-24 in the men’s final.

Teams from Institute of Technical Education and Research (ITER), SOA’s faculty of engineering and technology, won the e-Sports events CODM and Valorant. ASBM University finished runner-up in CODM while Silicon Institute of Technology came second in Valorant.

Altogether 16 universities including SOA participated in the event. The winners were presented with cash awards, certificates and trophies at a function held in the evening attended by SOA vice-chancellor Prof Bijay Kumar Sahoo, pro-vice chancellor Prof Pradipta Kumar Nanda, dean of the faculty of medical sciences Prof (Dr) Sanghamitra Mishra, dean of faculty of Pharmaceutical Sciences Prof Sudam C. Si, dean of faculty of management sciences Prof Anup Kumar Samantaray, dean (Student’s Welfare) Prof Jyoti Ranjan Das and sports officer Sunita Barma.
