New batch of MBBS students take the Hippocratic Oath.
Bhubaneswar: The new batch of MBBS students who have taken admission into the Institute of Medical Sciences and SUM Hospital here, faculty of medicine of Siksha ‘O’ Anusandhan (SOA), on Thursday took the customary Hippocratic Oath while going through the white coat ceremony.
The ceremony marks the medical students’ transition from the study of preclinical to clinical health sciences.
The Hippocratic Oath, widely known in Greek medical texts, is sworn by physicians vowing to uphold specific ethical standards.
The programme was attended by Saswati Das, vice-president of SOA, who congratulated the new students while urging them to strive to be good doctors as well as good human beings.
Prof. Sanghamitra Mishra, dean of IMS and SUM Hospital, administered the oath to the students.
SOA’s vice-chancellor and eminent neurosurgeon, Prof. Ashok Kumar Mahapatra, who addressed the students, urged them to uphold ethics in their lives to be good physicians and citizens. He said their attitude and temperament would be vital to be successful in their profession.
Prof. Pusparaj Samantasinhar, medical superintendent of IMS and SUM Hospital, Prof. Ajay Kumar Jena, additional dean, Prof. Rajesh Kumar Lenka, deputy medical superintendent, Prof. Jyoti Ranjan Das, dean, Students’ Welfare, were present.
