Mumbai: Police have filed a case against a man who allegedly impersonated an officer from the Chief Minister’s Office (CMO) along with three others for duping a Mumbai jeweller of Rs 2.8 crore, officials said on Monday.

The 57-year-old jeweller, Shailesh Jain, lodged a complaint at the Lokmanya Tilak Marg Police Station on November 28. In his statement, he said he met Vaibhav Paresh Thakar, 32, in January 2024. Thakar allegedly introduced himself as a Class I officer working in the CMO.

According to the complaint, Thakar, along with his wife, mother-in-law and an agent identified as Birju Salla, allegedly took money, gold and diamonds from the jeweller on different pretexts between February and April 2024, cheating him of a total of Rs 2.8 crore.

Based on Jain’s complaint, police have registered a case of cheating against the four accused and launched an investigation.
