Kolkata recorded a slight rise in forest cover between 2021 and 2023, according to the Indian State of Forest Report 2023 (ISFR 2023). Despite the increase, the city remains the least green among India’s megacities. Successive cyclonic storms have been cited as a major factor behind the destruction of greenery in the region, as reported by the Times of India.

As per the report, Kolkata’s forest cover grew from 1.77 sq km in 2021 to 2.06 sq km in 2023, an increase of 0.29 sq km. In percentage terms, the city’s forest cover rose from 0.9% to 1.1%.

While Kolkata showed a marginal improvement, its total forest cover remains the lowest among major cities. Delhi leads the chart with 195.3 sq km of forest area, while Ahmedabad registered the most significant growth, increasing its forest cover by 5.48 sq km to reach 14.89 sq km. In contrast, Chennai saw a reduction of 2.64 sq km, the steepest decline among metros.

Urban forests, which include trees in parks, along streets, and in open spaces, play a crucial role in mitigating climate change effects, managing storm water, reducing cyclone speeds, and improving air quality. They also provide vital health benefits, reducing stress and offering recreational spaces for activities like walking and cycling.

Experts emphasize the need to integrate urban forestry into city planning to address environmental challenges, promote healthy lifestyles, and preserve biodiversity. Despite the recent progress, Kolkata’s forest cover remains a concern, requiring sustained efforts to enhance and protect the city’s green spaces.
