Kolkata Police have implemented a 40 kmph speed limit for two-wheelers on the Maa and AJC Bose Road flyovers, including their approach roads and descent ramps. The Times of India reported that this restriction applies to all city flyovers unless a lower speed limit is specified.

The police commissioner, Manoj Verma, announced on Saturday that the 10 pm to 6 am ban on two-wheelers on these flyovers has been lifted. However, speed monitoring will be intensified round the clock to ensure compliance.

A new notification states, “Movement of two-wheelers shall be allowed on the entire Maa flyover and AJC Bose Road flyover at all times with a speed restriction of 40 kmph to ensure rider safety.”

Previously, the speed limit for vehicles on these flyovers was 60 kmph, but recent incidents have underscored the need for stricter measures. Last week, three fatal accidents occurred on the Maa flyover due to high speeds and failure to navigate steep turns. Victims were flung off the flyover, highlighting the dangers of rash riding.

According to police, the speed cap aims to reduce accidents, standardise traffic norms across the city, and optimise personnel resources with modern speed-tracking gadgets. The move seeks to promote safety while giving riders time to adjust to the new regulations.
