Italian cricketers share special moments with Kolkata children ahead of T20 World Cup clash
Kolkata: In a heartwarming build-up to their historic T20 World Cup match against Scotland on February 9, members of the Italian cricket team spent time with children at Eden Gardens here on Sunday.
A total of 32 boys and girls from city schools took part in a lively cricket session where they bowled, batted and received guidance from the visiting players. The Italian cricketers not only shared tips and techniques but also interacted warmly with the youngsters, shaking hands and signing autographs on their T-shirts.
According to a UNICEF statement, the players were delighted to engage with the children and were visibly moved by their enthusiasm and energy.
The session was organised under the ICC-UNICEF ‘Cricket 4 Good’ initiative. UNICEF West Bengal chief Monjur Hossain thanked the Italian team for making time for the programme and highlighted the importance of ensuring children have safe spaces to play and grow. He stressed that the “Right to Play” is vital for a child’s overall development and confidence.
“You need safe environments where children can play with joy and self-belief. Through this cricket clinic, ICC and UNICEF are working together to promote that right,” Hossain said.
Italy’s wicketkeeper-batter Gian-Piero Meade described the experience as memorable. “We coached the kids, but we also learned from them. It was wonderful to see their smiles. The excitement on the ground was infectious,” he said. Meade added that some of the youngsters showed impressive technique, and he noticed a few promising fast bowlers while keeping wickets.
For the children, the interaction was equally special. Hiramon Bairagi, an aspiring all-rounder, said meeting international cricketers felt like a dream. “The advice they gave us will help in my future matches. It was very motivating,” he said.
Team Italy coach Mohsin Sheikh also praised the enthusiasm of the young participants, especially the girls. He said the clinic gave the children a rare chance to learn directly from international players and gain valuable exposure on the field.
