Indore metro line to be shifted underground following public protests

Indore: The Madhya Pradesh government has approved a major change to the Indore Metro Rail route after sustained protests from residents and traders along the planned stretch. The new alignment will now be developed as an underground corridor, state urban development and housing minister Kailash Vijayvargiya announced on Monday.

The metro project, launched in 2019, had encountered opposition from people living and working along densely populated residential and commercial zones. Locals had raised concerns that the elevated line would disturb daily life and negatively affect businesses.
Following public objections, the government decided to modify the route. “We have unanimously agreed that the metro rail will now go underground from Khajrana Square through Palasia Square up to Bada Ganpati,” Vijayvargiya said after a project review meeting.

He added that if needed, the revised plan would be presented before the state Cabinet for formal approval under the guidance of chief minister Mohan Yadav.

The move is expected to ease concerns of local residents while ensuring smooth progress of the Indore Metro project — a key urban mobility initiative aimed at reducing traffic congestion and improving connectivity in the city.
