Haryana honour killing: Woman shot dead by brother for marrying against family’s wishes, four arrested
Chandigarh: A 23-year-old woman, Sapna, was allegedly shot dead by her brother and his associates at her in-laws’ home in Kahni village under Sadar police station on Wednesday night, in what police say is a clear case of honour killing.
Her brother-in-law, Sahil, suffered bullet injuries while trying to stop the attackers and is currently being treated at PGIMS, where doctors have described his condition as stable. Police have registered a case based on Sahil’s complaint and begun an investigation.
Sapna’s husband, Suraj, an auto-rickshaw driver, was away from home when the attack took place. The couple, who belonged to the same caste, had fallen in love during their school days and married three-and-a-half years ago despite opposition from both families.
According to a family member, CCTV footage captured four men approaching the house around 9.40 pm. “They forced their way inside and fired at Sapna in her room. She died instantly. Sahil, who was in another room, was shot while trying to intervene,” the family member said.
Police teams reached the crime scene soon after receiving information, sent the body for postmortem, and called forensic experts to examine the spot. Sahil’s formal statement was recorded on Thursday.
Speaking to the media, Suraj said the accused had previously issued threats over their disapproval of the marriage. He added that the couple had lived in Rohtak for nearly 18 months before returning to the village two years ago. Suraj appealed for swift action, urging authorities to ensure the accused are brought to justice.
DSP Ravi Khundia said initial findings suggest Sapna was targeted by her brother over longstanding resentment regarding her marriage. “Multiple shots were fired-one proved fatal for Sapna, while another injured Sahil. We have formed four dedicated police teams to track down the accused. Their identities are known and raids are underway,” he said.
