Fresh snow disrupts road travel in Kashmir, Srinagar-Jammu highway shut for third day

Srinagar: Fresh snowfall across parts of Kashmir on Sunday kept the vital Srinagar-Jammu National Highway closed for the third consecutive day, leaving hundreds of vehicles stranded along the route, officials said.

The 270-kilometre highway, which serves as the main road link between the Valley and the rest of the country, was shut on Friday after heavy snowfall made travel unsafe. Since then, traffic has remained suspended as authorities continue efforts to clear the snow.

A senior traffic police official said restoration work is underway but progress has been slow due to continued snowfall, particularly in areas around Kulgam district. “Snow clearance operations are in progress, but fresh snowfall along the highway is delaying the reopening. It may take some more time before traffic can resume,” the official said.

Srinagar city also woke up to light snowfall in the early hours of Sunday, adding to the winter chill.

Despite the challenging weather conditions, flight services at Srinagar International Airport have been operating without disruption. Officials confirmed that several flights have already landed and operations are running as scheduled.

“The flight operations at Srinagar airport are normal,” an Airport Authority of India official said.
