Mumbai: Four people have been arrested in connection with the firing outside filmmaker Rohit Shetty’s residence in Mumbai, with investigators suspecting links to a member of the Lawrence Bishnoi gang.
The incident took place around 12.45 am on February 1, when at least five rounds were fired at the first floor of a nine-storey building in the Juhu area. One of the bullets hit the glass of a gym inside the building. No one was injured. Police said it is not yet clear whether Shetty was present at home at the time.
Soon after the firing, security around the building was tightened. Teams from the local police and the crime branch reached the spot and began an investigation. CCTV footage from the area is being examined, and forensic and ballistic experts collected evidence from the scene.
Initially, five people were detained in Pune by the Warje Malwadi police. They were identified as Aman Marote, 27, and Aditya Gayaki, 19, both from Karve Nagar; Siddharth Yenpure, 20, Samarth Pomaji, 18, and Swapnil Sakat, 23, from Dhayari. They were later handed over to Mumbai Police.
Of the five detained, four were formally arrested late on Sunday night by the Anti-Extortion Cell of the Mumbai Crime Branch after their alleged role in providing logistical support to the shooters came to light. A Mumbai court remanded them to police custody till February 5.
Police said the accused are suspected to have links with Shubham Lonkar, a member of the Bishnoi gang and an accused in the 2024 murder of NCP leader Baba Siddique.
A few hours after the firing, a threatening message surfaced on social media claiming responsibility for the attack. The post, shared from an account named “Shubham Lonkar and Arzoo Bishnoi,” warned the filmmaker and referred to the incident as a “trailer.” It also mentioned other alleged gang operatives and carried threats directed at the film industry.
A case has been registered under sections related to attempt to murder in the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita and relevant provisions of the Arms Act. Further investigation is underway.
