Eminent surgeon Dhirendra Ray passes away

Prof. (Dr) Dhirendra Kumar Ray passed away at the age of 76.

Bhubaneswar: Eminent surgeon and former dean of Institute of Medical Sciences and SUM Hospital Prof. (Dr) Dhirendra Kumar Ray passed away while undergoing treatment at the SUM Ultimate Medicare here on Sunday. He was 76.

Considered an expert in healthcare and medical education, he also served as principal of SCB Medical College and Hospital in Cuttack.

A skilled administrator, Prof. Ray also worked as director of Regional Spinal Injury Centre, Odisha and Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel Institute of Pediatrics, Cuttack.

Earlier, he worked as Professor in Surgery at SCB Medical College and Hospital and MKCG Medical College and Hospital, Behampur. Prof. Ray also served as interim vice-chancellor of Siksha ‘O’ Anusandhan Deemed to be University, Bhubaneswar.

After graduating from SCB Medical College in 1968, he did his post-graduation in Surgery from the same institute in 1973. He underwent higher training in Cardiothoracic and Vascular surgery in AIIMS, New Delhi in 1986.

Prof. Ray is survived by his wife Prof. (Dr) Juthika Ray, a former Professor in department of Dermatology at IMS and SUM Hospital, a son and a daughter.

Prof. (Dr.) Manojranjan Nayak, founder president of SOA, condoled the passing away of Prof. Ray describing him as ‘a great man and a blessed soul’.

Prof. Ray worked relentlessly for the development of IMS and SUM Hospital from its inception. “The SOA family is indebted to him,” he said in his condolence message.
