Direct Jammu-Srinagar train likely to start by year-end: Railway officials

Jammu: A direct train service between Jammu and Srinagar is expected to begin before the end of this year, as most operational and redevelopment works in the Jammu division are nearing completion, officials from the Indian Railways said on Wednesday.

The project marks a major step in enhancing rail connectivity between Kashmir and the rest of India. Currently, the Vande Bharat Express operates only between Katra in Reasi district and Srinagar.

According to Northern Railway officials, final works on tracks, bridges and station redevelopment between Jammu and Katra are progressing rapidly. “The track-related work is nearly complete, while civil construction, including new platforms and passenger facilities at Jammu station, is in the final stages. The project is being closely monitored to begin direct services soon,” an official said.

Flash floods earlier this year had slowed progress, but the timeline has now been reset, with all major works expected to finish by November 30. A final decision on launching the service will be taken soon after.

The Udhampur–Srinagar–Baramulla Rail Link (USBRL), India’s most challenging railway project, passes through the Himalayas and includes marvels such as the world’s highest rail bridge over the Chenab River and the country’s first cable-stayed railway bridge at Anji Khad.

Once operational, the Jammu–Srinagar direct train will ensure all-weather rail connectivity and boost economic development across the region.
