New Delhi: The 72-year-old self-styled godman arrested in connection with the deaths of three people in outer Delhi’s Peeragarhi has shown “no remorse” during questioning, police said on Thursday.
The accused, Kamruddin alias Baba, a resident of Firozabad in Uttar Pradesh, was arrested on Thursday and remanded to five days in police custody.
According to officials, despite sustained interrogation, Baba has not expressed any regret over the alleged crime. Investigators have now expanded the probe to examine his financial dealings, phone records and possible links to similar cases in other states.
Police said call detail records and technical surveillance revealed that he was in touch with several people. Each contact is being checked to find out whether others were also lured with promises of “dhanvarsha” — or a shower of wealth — through tantric rituals.
Officials are also looking into a 2025 double murder case registered against him in Uttar Pradesh’s Makkhanpur, where a similar method was allegedly used. Another case has been registered against him in Rajasthan’s Dholpur, and its details are being verified.
Police believe Baba targeted people facing financial troubles. He would win their trust by promising to perform rituals to bring sudden wealth, then allegedly offer them sweets or drinks laced with poison before fleeing with their money.
The latest case came to light on February 8 when three people — two men and a woman — were found unconscious inside a parked car in Peeragarhi. They were taken to Sanjay Gandhi Memorial Hospital, where doctors declared them brought dead.
The victims were identified as Randhir (76) from Baprola, Shiv Naresh (42), a property dealer from Nagli Dairy and Laxmi (40) from Jahangirpuri.
Police said Baba allegedly promised the trio a windfall of Rs 2-3 crore through tantric rituals. He is accused of mixing poison in ladoos and drinks during a car journey from Loni to Delhi. CCTV footage reportedly shows him getting into their car. When the victims lost consciousness, he allegedly took Rs 2 lakh in cash and abandoned the vehicle.
During interrogation, Baba is said to have tried to mislead investigators about his movements. However, CCTV footage, electronic surveillance and location data placed him in the car on the day of the incident, police said.
Officials added that the exact nature of the poison will be confirmed after the detailed post-mortem report. Investigators are also examining whether he acted alone or had help in identifying victims and arranging meetings. They are further checking if he used social media to advertise his services and attract targets.
