Delhi readies four new bus depots to support shift to fully electric fleet

New Delhi: The Delhi government is preparing to open four new bus depots as it steps up efforts to convert the city’s entire public transport fleet to electric buses by the end of the year, officials said.

According to the Transport Department, construction has been completed at the depots located in Nangloi, Dwarka, Kohat Enclave and Rithala, and the facilities are now ready to be formally handed over. These depots will be used to house the next batch of electric buses scheduled to be inducted in the coming months and will also support charging operations.

Officials said the city has already added more than 3,500 electric buses to its fleet, with plans to scale up the number to around 8,000 by year-end. The expansion has made it necessary to create additional space for parking and charging to accommodate the growing number of e-buses.

At present, Delhi operates over 10 dedicated electric bus depots across locations such as Rohini Sector 37, Rajghat, Nehru Place, Wazirpur, Burari, Mundela Kalan, Mayapuri, Majlis Park and Shastri Park.

Transport officials recently briefed chief minister Rekha Gupta that the four newly built depots are complete and ready for use. The facilities are expected to become operational once the charging infrastructure is fully installed, they added.
