Dehradun: FIR against pet owners in case of dog bite under new rules
Dehradun: Pet owners in Dehradun could face police action if their dogs attack or bite people. The municipal corporation has decided that an FIR will be registered against the owner in such cases.
The move comes after several incidents of dog attacks, especially involving aggressive breeds such as Rottweilers. To address the issue, the Dehradun Municipal Corporation has framed new regulations on pet ownership.
As per the Dehradun Dog Licensing Bylaws 2025, apart from issuing a challan, the authorities can also file an FIR against the owner if a pet dog bites someone. The corporation will also have the power to take the dog into custody.
The rules, which will be implemented after being notified in the official gazette, make it compulsory to obtain a license for dogs above three months of age. The licence will be valid for one year and must be renewed annually. Pet owners will also be required to submit a valid anti rabies vaccination certificate issued by a veterinarian at the time of registration.
