Guwahati: The Assam government has approved the release of Rs 479 crore in the first phase of its ambitious plan to build a state-of-the-art judicial township in north Guwahati, chief minister Himanta Biswa Sarma announced on Sunday.
Speaking at a press conference after the state cabinet meeting, Sarma said the government has granted administrative approval for the development of the judicial township over 100 bighas (approximately 33 acres) of land at Rangmahal.
“The cabinet has cleared the first-phase construction of a modern judicial township at Rangmahal, North Guwahati, with an estimated cost of Rs 478.78 crore,” the chief minister said.
The first phase of the project will focus on building an integrated High Court complex, connecting all key buildings through bridges to serve as the central judicial hub of Assam. The complex will include the High Court, bar offices and other administrative facilities, the cabinet note stated.
Sarma also announced several other major decisions taken during the cabinet meeting, including the approval of the ‘Assam Startup and Innovation Policy 2025–30’, aimed at positioning the state as a leading entrepreneurship and innovation hub in India over the next five years.
“The total financial implication for the new startup policy is Rs 397 crore for a period of five years,” he said, highlighting the government’s focus on creating a supportive ecosystem for young entrepreneurs.
In addition, the cabinet approved the proposal to establish a new university named ‘SU-KA-PHA University, Assam’, likely to be set up in the Charaideo district.
The meeting also cleared a decision regarding the Career Advancement Scheme (CAS) for assistant professors and librarians working in government-funded colleges, approving the date of effect of their promotions under the scheme.
