Ashwin on 100 Tests: ‘Success comes from self-critique and constant improvement’

As Ravichandran Ashwin prepares for his 100th Test match against England in Dharamshala starting Thursday, the Indian spin maestro revealed the behind-the-scenes journey that shaped his cricketing success. In a candid conversation with Anil Kumble on JioCinema’s Spin Maestros, Ashwin shared insights into his self-reflective approach to cricket.

Having recently joined the prestigious 500-wicket club, Ashwin said despite external praise, he often finds it challenging to savor success fully. However, this self-critical mindset has been pivotal in his evolution as a cricketer. “Cricket is one of the greatest self-taught sports. If you’re ruthless and very critical about yourself, it will give you the truth staring at your face,” he said.

He pointed out that the discomfort with his own performance on a given day fuels his determination to bring more to the table in subsequent matches.

Acknowledging the upcoming milestone, Ashwin expressed gratitude for the unwavering support of his family. While the 100th Test holds personal significance, he highlighted its even greater meaning for his father, mother, wife and children, who have been pillars of support throughout his cricketing journey.

Reflecting on the challenges faced by spinners in limited-overs cricket, Ashwin highlighted his own success story in making a comeback in T20s and ODIs. He dismissed the notion of finger-spinners being less efficient than wrist-spinners, and said that a bowler’s success is determined by the repetitions and awareness of their skills, regardless of the type of bowling.

In a historic achievement, Ashwin became the first Indian cricketer to accumulate 100 wickets and 1000-plus runs against England in Test cricket, joining the ranks of Gary Sobers, Monty Noble, and George Giffen.

As India leads 3-1 in the ongoing series against England, all eyes are on the fifth and final Test in Dharamshala, where Ashwin is set to mark his 100th Test appearance.
