Latur: Maharashtra’s cultural affairs and IT minister Ashish Shelar on Monday announced that the ancient Shri Nilkantheshwar Temple in Nilanga, Latur district, will soon undergo restoration and be officially recognised as a state-protected monument.
During his visit to the site, Shelar said the government will provide significant financial support for the temple’s preservation and also include its traditional stepwells, known locally as Barav, in the protected area.
“Maharashtra is blessed with a rich cultural legacy, and the government is committed to preserving these historic treasures while promoting the state’s overall development,” the minister was quoted as saying.
He added that restoration of old temples across Maharashtra will be carried out through district-level annual plans, with specific funds allocated for conservation. The Nilanga temple and its stepwells will receive dedicated assistance to protect their historic and architectural significance.
Shelar assured that “every effort will be made to safeguard this priceless heritage,” confirming that the temple complex will soon gain official state-protected status.
Later, the minister inspected Ausa Fort in the same district and said the government will speed up its ongoing restoration work. The fort, known for its historical importance, will be repaired and upgraded with tourist amenities.
Shelar also directed authorities to relocate families affected by anti-encroachment drives within the fort premises to suitable housing under government schemes.
To enhance the fort’s appeal, he proposed introducing a sound-and-light show highlighting its historical stories and events. “Once fully restored, Ausa Fort can become a key heritage tourism destination in the region,” he added.
