New Delhi: Ahmedabad has officially been selected to host the 2030 Commonwealth Games, making India the venue for the centenary edition of the event. The decision was confirmed at the Commonwealth Games Federation (CGF) General Assembly in Glasgow, where delegates from 74 member nations ratified India’s bid.

This will be India’s first time hosting the Games since 2010 and only the second time an Indian city will stage the event. The CGF said India presented a strong vision centred around Ahmedabad, with infrastructure planning designed to build on the momentum of upcoming global sporting events.

The announcement sparked celebrations at New Delhi’s Major Dhyan Chand National Stadium, where the Ministry of Youth Affairs and Sports organised a ceremony attended by union sports minister Dr. Mansukh Mandaviya, IOA officials, athletes and sporting icons. Mandaviya said hosting the 2030 Games reflects the growing global confidence in India’s ability to stage major international competitions.

He noted that India is already preparing for several major events, including the 2029 World Police Games and reiterated the country’s long-term aspiration to host the 2036 Olympic Games.

The event in Delhi also featured a special audio-visual showcase on India’s Commonwealth Games history, followed by a laser show and the unveiling of the official hashtag #CWG2030InBHARAT.

Prime minister Narendra Modi later congratulated the nation, calling the selection a testament to India’s sporting progress and collective spirit of sportsmanship.
